Blacks in the American Civil War

This is a copy of W. E. B. DuBois’ “The General Strike” about the massive influence of blacks on the Union Army in the American Civil War

Published in 1935

I’ve put this here as it’s not on the internet. Although he calls it a General Strike it wasn’t exactly that. But it’s information that’s not widely known. The introduction is by Eric Foner, a marxist academic specialising in the Civil War and Reconstruction.

Just seen that this is on the internet as part of a very much longer text called “BLACK RECONSTRUCTION AN ESSAY TOWARD A HISTORY OF THE PART WHICH BLACK FOLK PLAYED IN THE ATTEMPT TO RECONSTRUCT DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA,1860-1880” – http://ouleft.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/blackreconstruction.pdf
Mind you, it might take quite a long time to download the particular section on the black general strike
